清明,脆弱

Image
清明时节雨纷纷,路上行人欲断魂。借问酒家何处有?牧童遥指杏花村。  好幽美的几句诗。 <subsequent images taken from the World Press Photo 2016 exhibition, gird yourself > A Slovenian police officer escorts refugees after they crossed from Croatia A strange kind of terrible beauty in this photo also. Ponomarev really composed it so beautifully; the horse bows its head, like how I'd imagine the hearts of the people. Yet the ethereal sunlight shines down on both the horseman and the people. Libyan refugees on an overcrowded dinghy wait as a MSF rescue ship approaches People cross into Turkey through a broken fence, near the official border crossing at Akçakale, Syria I stared at these nameless faces for a long time. And then I saw this. People run from water cannon fired by Turkish soldiers, to keep them away from border fences near Akçakale  And this.  A father cradles his lifeless daughter after a Syrian air raid And this. Adam. 7. Badly burned when bomb dropped by ...

The Mountains are Calling Me

Image
In the Altai Mountains, Bayan-Ulgii, Mongolia I don't know why, these past 2 weeks have been filled with so much emotional thinking, which translated to a compulsion to create content. The mountains. There is a felt heartache as I look at pictures of them. I long to be in the mountains again. Why though, I was asking myself. I am a city girl who failed her physical fitness test because she lacked the stamina to complete the 2.4km run. But the mountains, they stir in me a sense of quiet, almost-sad joy and a feeling of connectedness. In the mountains, I find that I rather be alone or not talk. There is a sense of theophany perhaps. Shepherding the yaks In my second time in Mongolia, I hiked through the forest of trees and settled on a plateau. There are no photos of the mountains I saw because I had intentionally left my handphone behind. I sat there, alone, for maybe a hour. Just singing hymns, gazing out at the mountains and letting my heart be filled. So so tha...

Food: A Liminal Space

Image
Liminal space: an in-between space of both becoming and transition. It struck me as I was thinking about how we conceived the almost-crazy idea of doing a mini social enterprise (what is thesis. what is year 4. what is Exco lol), that food has been central in many things. Looking at photos of food from the past 2 weeks (mostly this week), I begin to see that food has created a liminal space. With HX: Engaging with social issues as a Christian A clearer shape for hitherto subliminal thoughts, yet not fully formed (would they?) The act of food instagraphy as a metaphor for this generation To think! Alone! The becoming of a community. Usually begins with food. A simultaneous reflection of who we are and want to be  (Do I sound like I am super deep yet HAHA) (But I am. Deep deep in God's love)

Today I am Thankful

what gives me the feels

I don’t believe in charity. I believe in solidarity. Charity is so vertical. It goes from the top to the bottom. Solidarity is horizontal. It respects the other person and learns from the other. I have a lot to learn from other people. Eduardo Galeano When life gives you bread, make bread pudding. (Afterthought: Or rather, when God gives you bread, ask Him what to do with it. And my family was blessed through this-- parents went to Botanic Gardens to feed the koi fish with the leftover bread crusts & we had a lot of fun making stuffs from the bread.) Sunday: Copied this quote into my journal- A.W. Tozer says that people who are crucified with Christ have three distinct marks: 1. they are facing only one direction, 2. they can never turn back, and 3. they no longer have plans of their own. They longer any plans of their own. Monday: Already felt like I got backstabbed by God yet the bread distribution was far from smooth (chaos?). Felt more upset as I th...

Hey. Its a clinche, but time flies huh. School, serious stuff, teen angst... ... just couldn't find the mood to blog. Or take pictures of what I made. I have my own brownie recipe now!! No pictures though :( But take a look at these: Onde- onde, pronounced onday onday. Its a type of kuih, which is Asian pastries/cakes/snacks mainly steamed. This has palm sugar, gula melaka in it. The green colour comes from the pandan (screwpine leaves)  juice incorporated into the dough. Yum. And this is sorta a failed thing.. There are sliced apples below with cinnamon oatmeal cookie dough on top. Though it tasted superb, it was a pain to take it out. But still, yum. That's all for today.. no more remotely interesting photos to show off. :) a random photo of Marina Boardwalk in dear lil' Singapore.

New memories of an old place

Image
Tanjong Pagar Railway Station. Heck, I'd never even have known its glorious existence if news of it going to be demolished hasn't reached the newspaper. As it turned out, it was an old old place indeed. The colonial style. The four pillars of economy at that time. I just love the building, grand old dame eh? The murals. The chairs that are surely older than me. Are these going to be gone? I really love this place!! (oh, I said it already) Sign this petition ? Hope you saw this coming... :) Pretty please? * To garner your utmost sympathy, I just recovered from fever and am now having acute nasopharyngitis (translate: the painest sore throat ever), and I need my voice to wish people Merry Christmas at the block party tomorrow. P.S. Also, last Christmas I had fever too. Here's the link again! http://www.petitiononline.com/TjPager/petition.html
